Mt. Sinai Poster - "Waiting To Cross" (24x36)
By Andrew Jones
After fleeing Egypt, the Israelites were told by God to camp on the shores of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:2). There is only one location along the Gulf of Aqaba (aka the Red Sea) that would accommodate more than one million Israelites: The modern-day area of Nuweiba, shown here.
This resort area has a large beach that is surrounded by mountains with only one main wadi (dry river bed) into the area and no way of escape for anyone cornered on this beach.
In addition to the biblical account, Jewish historian Flavius Josephus mentions the mountains on the south coming to the very edge of the Red Sea, blocking the Israelites’ escape. The Israelites would have been truly enclosed by the wilderness per Pharaoh’s comments (Exodus 14:3).
This is the view the Israelites saw moments before God performed one of the greatest miracles ever recorded (Exodus 14:4, 31). “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord… The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14: 13-14)
